Pit and Fissure Sealants
What is a sealant?
During the exam, your dentist may recommend sealants to protect your child’s teeth against cavities. Dental sealants are thin coatings applied over the chewing surfaces of molar teeth.1
Why sealants?
Permanent first (6-year) and second (12-year) molars have deep grooves that can be difficult to keep clean. No matter how diligently your child brushes, some grooves are too small for normal toothbrush bristles to reach, leaving cavity-causing bacteria undisturbed. Over time, harmful bacteria form cavities that can eventually become painful.
What can I do?
Your dentist may suggest sealants soon after the molars erupt as a way to prevent cavities from developing. When patients have sealants painted on molar teeth, they reduce the risk of cavities by as much as 80%
How does it work?
Your dentist will paint a thin coating of clear or tooth-colored material over the deepest grooves in the tooth. We use a special light to finish the process and keep the tooth protected. Sealants are a quick, easy, and pain-free way to keep your child happy, healthy, and smiling.
